Hand stitched kimonos

As my desk has gone, my sewing machine and equipment packed ready for the house move, I’ve been unpicking kimonos, ready to wash, iron and upcycle into new products.

Kimonos are made up of rectangles of different size (sleep, front/back, collar). These are hand stitched together, folding parts under to make the collar and gathered to form the curved lower part of the sleeve.

As I unpick each seam I’m amazed at the delicate, perfect stitches that hold the kimono together. I can only wonder at the hours this stitching must have taken - and how quickly I’m destroying all that handiwork...
